The program focuses on the question “How to do exhibitions?”, where an exhibition is understood in a broader sense and can take any form: from the traditional exhibition of tangible works to conferences and social events. To ask this question is to think and act as a curator, that is, to come up with innovative ways of showing art that arise at the intersection of different disciplines and ensure that art meets architecture, theater, film, public relations, programming, journalism, and design.
The training focuses on developing curatorial thinking and acquiring a wide range of practical knowledge and skills necessary to conceive and implement curatorial projects, including: research and topic finding, concept formulation, workflow planning and organization, budget preparation, media relations, documentation, and many others.
Throughout the course, students explore existing models of curatorial practice as they relate to specific cultural production contexts and procedures. The study is supported by critical thinking and writing skills, as well as a number of theoretical disciplines necessary for a curator to fulfill his or her professional tasks: history of art, history of exhibition activities, methodology of research work, basic techniques of contemporary art, etc.
Students will get additional practical experience by analyzing exhibition cases and creating their own exhibition project, which can be shown in the space of U Contemporary at Winzavod Contemporary Art Center.
As a result of the program graduates will form an idea of the curatorial profession as a complex activity with a flexible structure, able to adapt both to certain project tasks and personal interests and needs.
